The Yamuna river water is expected to arrive soon in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region following an agreement signed recently with the Haryana government for ensuring the supply of the State’s entire share of water as per the 1994 Yamuna Water Agreement. The availability of water will resolve the issue of shortage of drinking and irrigation water in the four districts of Shekhawati region.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said during his visit to Sikar on Sunday that the agreement signed with Haryana in February this year was one of the major achievements of his government. The Shekhawati region, situated at the edge of Thar desert, has been facing water scarcity since long.
The Chaudhary Kumbharam Lift Canal, built under the Indira Gandhi Canal Project, at present supplies 1,500 cusecs of water to some areas of Shekhawati. The Sikar Sambhag Nahar Lao Sangharsh Samiti has urged the State government to get Rajasthan’s full share of water from Tajewala Head and arrange for its supply to Sikar division.
Addressing a public meeting in Sikar, Mr. Sharma said the Bharatiya Janata Party government was taking decisions to ensure the availability of water and power in all parts of the State.
“No concrete action on these fronts was taken by the [previous] Congress regime. Our decisions on the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project, Dewas project in Udaipur, strengthening of Indira Gandhi Canal and Yamuna water agreement will bring sufficient quantity of water,” he said.
