CPCRI to lead Union govt.-funded research on effects of arecanut products on human health

The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) at Kasaragod, Kerala, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), will lead a Union government-funded research on whether chewing arecanut alone is associated with carcinogenic effects, Director K. Balachandra Hebbar said on Friday.

He was addressing farmers, scientists, researchers, technology developers, and others at a function organised to inaugurate a three-day farm sector exhibition and seminar on ‘harnessing plantation sector for sustainable development goals’ organised by the institute at Kasaragod.

Mr. Hebbar said that the research will be taken up with ₹9.9 crore grant by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farm Research. The research will have to be completed in three years from 2025.

“A multi-institutional project on clinical research studies to understand the effects of arecanut products on human health and to explore alternative uses of arecanut and its byproducts has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹9.9 crore,” Mr. Hebbar said.

The research team will have representations from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences; the National Botanical Research Institute; the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology; the Indian Institute of Science; Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research; the Central Food Technological Research Institute; Kasturba Medical College; K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, and SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, he said.

The exhibition has quality-planting materials, valuable handicrafts and homemade products from the farmers and SHGs for sale.

It has a display of various food products made using technologies developed by the government research institutes under the ICAR.

Some of the food products included coconut flower halwa; coconut cake; coconut banana cookies; low-fat banana chips; banana rava; banana bliss boost; banana shield starch; tender coconut chips; banana puffed snack; banana pasta; banana vinegar; pre-processed ragi flour; banana jam; banana pickle; banana wine, and the like.
