Watch: What is the HMPV virus?
The Indian Council of Medical Research has detected two cases of Human Metapneumovirus or HMPV, in Karnataka. The two cases that tested positive for HMPV are babies, who had a history of bronchopneumonia. These are the first cases of HMPV detected in India after China reported a surge in cases.

The Human Metapneumovirus is a virus that usually causes symptoms similar to the common cold. It often causes upper respiratory infections in people of all ages but, it can sometimes cause lower respiratory infections, like pneumonia, too. HMPV infections are more common in the winter and early spring. It was discovered in 2001.
The symptoms are similar to a cold, but some people can get very sick. Cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat and shortness of breath are common symptoms. Children, adults over 65 and people with breathing problems or a weakened immune system may also get severe symptoms. Clinical symptoms of HMPV infection may progress to bronchitis or pneumonia and are similar to other viruses that cause upper and lower respiratory infections.
HMPV spreads through direct contact with someone who has it or from touching things contaminated with the virus. It is likely spread from an infected person to others through secretions from coughing and sneezing. Close personal contact like touching or shaking hands, touching objects or surfaces that have the viruses on them, then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.
You can protect yourself by washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If you have cold-like symptoms, you should cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, wash your hands frequently and correctly, avoid sharing cups and eating utensils with others and stay at home when sick.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral therapy to treat HMPV and there are no vaccine to prevent HMPV. Most people can manage their symptoms at home until they feel better.
