Two quacks were arrested on Wednesday for giving prescriptions and treatment to patients in their illegal clinic cum pharmacy in Sholinghur town near Ranipet.
Health officials said the arrested quacks were identified as N. Tamilvanan, 46 and S. Pradeep Rai, 35. Both of them are school dropouts. They were natives of Sholinghur town.
Initial inquiry revealed that they have been running their illegal clinic cum pharmacy for many years. They have converted their house into a clinic and pharmacy for patients. On an average, 35-50 patients visit their clinics every day.
A special medical team led by B. Karunakaran, health officer, Government Taluk Hospital (Sholingur), conducted a surprise check in the houses of the two quacks after health officials got complaints from residents. The medical team also included a doctor, a pharmacist and a drug inspector.
During the searches, health officials found many used medical equipment, prescriptions and letterheads in the clinics, which were set up on the rear side of the pharmacies. They also found used syringes, capsules and other medical equipment inside these clinics.
The clinics and pharmacies were sealed. The team also seized medical equipment, including blood pressure apparatus, stethoscope, and syringes. The two quacks were said to be first time offenders. A case was registered by Sholinghur Town police before they were lodged at sub-jail in Walajah town. A probe is underway.
