A presentation made by Sri Venkateswara Vedic University (SVVU) before a medical team here on Friday (January 3) hinted at measures to eliminate suicidal thoughts.
SVVU director (Research and Publications) A. Venkata Radheshyam, in his presentation before a team of medical professionals led by director and vice-chancellor of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) R.V.Kumar, called it an essential prerequisite to study the ancient scriptures and texts to understand and appreciate the cultural and ethical practices followed in the ancient times.
Referring to the growing suicidal tendency among the youth owing to issues with education, love life, career, addiction and peer pressure, Mr. Radheshyam explained the importance of introducing the youth to the great epics and the Puranas to help them cultivate mental strength.
Dr. R.V. Kumar said that about eight lakh people end their life every year around the globe, many of which are attributed to factors such as depression, psychosis and drug addiction, and called for steps to eradicate negative thinking.
SVIMS registrar Aparna R. Bitla, Sri Padmavati Medical College for Women principal Usha Kalawat, Physiotherapy College principal R. Madhavi, Nursing College principal Sudha Rani, heads of department Uma Maheswari (Bioinformatics), P.V.G.N. Sarma (Biotechnology), D.S. Madhu Babu (Dentistry) and Durga Anjali (Psychiatry) took part.
