Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), which has rejuvenated 800 waterbodies in the State, will restore 200 more tanks by April 2025, according to its president and Rajya Sabha member D. Veerendra Heggade.

With this, 1,000 waterbodies will stand rejuvenated in Karnataka under “Nammuru Namma Kere” initiative of the project, he said at Dharmasthala on Tuesday.

He was speaking after handing over the rejuvenated Chowdanahalli Kere under Kushavara Gram Panchayat of Belur taluk in Hassan district to former MLA Lingesh. It was the 800th waterbody restored under the initiative.

Mr. Heggade said that environmental conservation, including preserving waterbodies, is the responsibility and duty of all people. One can not expect the government, including gram panchayats, to do them all the time. Fruit-bearing plants should be planted on the banks of waterbodies rejuvenated.

Asking people not to pollute waterbodies, Mr. Heggade said that people should come forward to conserve ponds, tanks and lakes.

Shivananda Kalave, environmental journalist, spoke on the conservation of waterbodies.
