A one-day workshop on Climate-smart agriculture and disaster risk mitigation, organised jointly by the Kerala Agricultural University, College of Climate Change and Environmental Science, and NABARD, at the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) recently focused on how climate change – the world’s most significant challenge – is adversely affecting agriculture and related sectors.
Experts discussed sustainable approaches to mitigate these negative impacts, emphasising that transitioning to green energy is the most effective way to combat climate change.
The NABARD has proposed to establish a ‘climate chair’ at the KAU. It assured full support for research in this area, highlighting its commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor B. Ashok. Dean of College of Climate Change and Environmental Science P.O. Nameer; ICAR Emeritus Professor P. Indiradevi; Chief General Manager, NABARD, Sanjeev D. Rohill, among other dignitaries, spoke at the workshop.
Environmental scientists also provided insights on Kerala’s climate change mitigation efforts and carbon emission reduction calculations. Experts, teachers, researchers, farmers, and students working in this field participated actively in the discussions, fostering a deeper awareness and exchange of ideas.
