A 110-kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) was recently inaugurated on the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) campus here.
According to a press release, G. Viswanathan, Founder-Chancellor, VIT, inaugurated the substation — the first in an academic institution in the country. GIS is a high-voltage substation in which the major conducting structures are contained in a compact and sealed environment.
The VIT campuses have a green cover composed of 1.3 lakh trees. Around 30 per cent of the campus is covered with lawn, potted trees, and medicinal plants. VIT has been taking significant efforts in reducing CO2 emissions, in line with Sustainable Development Goals, said the press release.
On the occasion, VIT vice-presidents Sankar Viswanathan and Sekar Viswanathan were present.
