Biotechnology conference
The release of a patent on a Pipette with pH Meter and the announcement of metagenomic DNA results, revealing an analysis containing 12,000 sequences which has been submitted in National Center for Biotechnology Information, USA, by the Department of Biotechnology, School of Biological Sciences of St. Joseph’s College, were among the highlights of a recent conference on ‘New Paradigms in Biotechnology and Sustainability 2025.’ A book titled Bioinformatics Tools and Techniques – A Practical Manual was also released on the occasion. An exhibition on biotechnology-related products and services was held as part of the programme. Prizes were given to winning entries in the oral presentation, poster, and ideathon competitions.
Maths Day celebrated (with pic)
School and college students celebrated National Maths Day by participating in the ‘Math Expo and Rally’ organised by the PG and Research Department of Mathematics, National College in Tiruchi recently. The programme, sponsored by the National Council for Science and Communication and the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, began with an awareness rally. A quiz competition, mental math challenge, math model presentation and exhibition were among the activities organised for the students. The team from Somarasempettai Government Higher Secondary School finished first in the quiz contest, while those from Brindavan Vidyalaya School and Sri Vageesha Vidyashram School topped the mental math challenge. In the math model presentation for Classes VI to VIII, the student teams from KK Nagar Government Higher Secondary School, Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya School (Classes IX and X) and Rajam Krishnamurthy Public School (Classes XI and XII), stood first respectively. Students from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College won first prize in the inter-college math model exhibition. The best teams from the model presentation and exhibition will proceed to the state level competition. The team from Rajam Krishnamurthy Public School topped the maths awareness rally contest.

Kings College of Engineering in Thanjavur celebrated National Maths Day with a host of activities. Students from schools and colleges in the region participated in an exhibition and model making events. Over 300 students from 23 schools pitted their wits in a maths quiz. The programme was sponsored by the National Council for Science and Communication and the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology.
Millet festival
A millet festival organised by Holy Cross College in Tiruchi sought to raise awareness about traditional food habits and the role played by the minor cereals. K. P. Nallasivam, head, Department of Philosophy, Tamil University, Thanjavur, spoke on the nutritional benefits of millet-based diet and the need to embrace indigenous food practices. A fair showcased a wide array of millet-based food items prepared by self-help groups and students of the college.
Business growth seminar
The role of academia in emerging business innovation and trends was the focus of a seminar organised by Department of Business Administration, Cauvery College for Women in association with SMART Journal of Business Management Studies, recently. M. Selvam, founder-publisher of SMART Journal, introduced the theme of the seminar. G. Veerakumaran, retired professor and head, Department of Cooperative Management, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, released the 21st annual issue of the journal, and a CD containing abstracts of the papers presented at the seminar. He also presented the SMART Journal Annual Awards to six personalities. The webinar sessions were held on a wide array of topics related to economic growth.
Seminar on personalised nutrition
The sustainability of personalised nutrition was the theme of a national seminar organised by the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics and B.Voc. Food Processing and Safety, at Jamal Mohamed College in Tiruchi recently. The event was sponsored by the DST (Department of Science and Technology) – SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board), Government of India and Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). In her inaugural address, K. Kala, Vice-Chancellor, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, emphasised the role of personalised nutrition in addressing global health and sustainability challenges. S.Uma Mageshwari, professor, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Education, Coimbatore, highlighted the importance of adapting research in nutrition and dietetics to modern trends.
Understanding impact of AI
A workshop on understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) for academic and scientific excellence was held by P.G. and Research Department of Physics, National College recently. J. Madhavan, head, and M.Victor Antony Raj, assistant professor, from the Department of Physics, Loyola College, Chennai, spoke on the impact of AI on modern science and traced its history in the modern era. Mr. Raj explained how generative AI could help in the field of education.
Nanomaterials for energy harvesting (with pic)
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Raman Research Foundation and the Department of Physics, Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Musiri to facilitate collaborative research projects during a conference on nanomaterials for energy harvesting and storage applications recently. The conference was inaugurated by S. Arumugam, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, Professor Badiadka Narayana, Vice-Chancellor, K.K. University, Nalanda, was the keynote speaker. Key topics covered during the conference included novel nanomaterials for solar cells, advancements in battery technologies, supercapacitors, and thermoelectric energy harvesting. Ravichandran, head, Department of Physics, A.A.V.M. Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contribution to the advancement of nanomaterials research. N. Vijayan, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, gave the valedictory address.
Skills workshop (with pic)
Second and final year students from the Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering of Karaikalmedu Government Women’s Polytechnic College were given an opportunity to hone their skills at a workshop on digital power supply design for integrated circuits that was held as a startup initiative at the institution recently. In her inaugural address, K. Anuradha, Executive Engineer, Electricity Department, Karaikal, encouraged the participants to utilise the workshop for their semester projects. The women students successfully designed and fabricated units of digital integrated circuits for use in their institution laboratories.
