Bharathiar University teams up with TIFAC, TNSCST to broad-base awareness on patents, copyrights and trademarks

Bharathiar University’s Intellectual Property Rights Cell (IPR) cell has broad-based its initiative to create awareness among the teaching community about the filing of patents, by teaming up with the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and the Patent Information Centre, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST).

Unlike in the past when the programme was held for its faculty members, this time around, the university has invited teachers and researchers from affiliated colleges and other higher educational institutions for the day-long faculty development programme on the topic titled ‘IPR: Translating Research from Campus to Corporate’ later this month.

The FDP, according to the organisers, is designed to equip educators, researchers and professionals with the knowledge and tools required to navigate the complexities of IPR and facilitate translation of academic research into impactful corporate solutions. The participants will gain insights into various aspects of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, as well as their role in safeguarding innovation.

“We expect the participation of over 150 participants for the day-long event on January 31, 2025,” M. Sumathy, Director, IPR Cell and Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, said.

“We will soon be updating the number of patents filed in the university website,” Prof. Sumathy said.

As per the available data, 20 patents have been filed in the field of Medical Physics, Solar cells, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Textiles, and Electronics. All the field patents have been published and two patents were granted, it states.

The University has already drafted an IPR Policy document for efficient and effective governance of the IP Assets of the University.
