Mangaluru International Airport on Saturday, December 28, said the airport had witnessed a remarkable year of growth and innovation starting in 2024 by achieving significant milestones.
MIA, in a release here, said it set new records in passenger and air traffic movement. October 2024 saw the highest ever passenger traffic for the fiscal year, with 2,02,892 passengers, including 1,38,902 domestic and 63,990 international travelers.
Its infrastructure development initiatives were recognised with the prestigious Build India Infra Award 2024 in the innovation category. The award was in recognition of the successful completion of a 2,450-metre runway re-carpeting project, which involved a unique flexible overlay of asphalt on a rigid (concrete) runway. Completed in 75 working days, the project significantly enhanced the safety and operational efficiency of the airport.
MIA has also made strides in sustainability by implementing several green initiatives, including energy-efficient lighting and waste management systems, contributing to a more sustainable aviation sector.
Expanding connectivity
The airport has expanded its connectivity with new routes and increased flight frequencies. Air India Express introduced a Boeing 737-8 service connecting Chennai and Mangaluru via Bengaluru. Additionally, IndiGo has increased its direct flights to Chennai, further improving connectivity.
The airport was adjudged the best airport in the “Under 5 million passenger category“ at Wings India 2024, Asia’s largest civil aviation exhibition. Former Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia presented the award in recognition of MIA’s achievements, including handling 19,27,466 passengers in 2023, a 14.17% increase from the previous year.
MIA aso received the Platinum Award at the Apex India Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2023 towards airport’s safety measures and its Vision 2025 of becoming the safest tabletop airport in India. MIA registered zero worksite-related incidents while it conducted comprehensive training programs.
Towards enhancing passenger experience and convenience, MIA has steadily increased the number of food and beverage and retail outlets on its premises. The introduction of the MIA super app (Adani One), a customer relations management tool, has streamlined the resolution of online passenger grievances.
