More facilities are set to come up at the Bio 360 Life Science Park, under the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, as part of the institution’s annual plan this year, including a biotech incubation space and a central laboratory animal facility for the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University (KVASU).
The park, located near Thonnakkal in the capital, was envisaged in 2017 as a geographical cluster of industries and research and development institutions to address the needs of the rapidly emerging life science, biotechnology and nanotechnology sectors. Out of the 75 acres envisaged for the first phase of the project, 70 acres has already been taken possession of. In addition, 86.07 acres of land were acquired during the second phase of the project.
As per the initial master plan for the institute, infrastructure development projects worth ₹12 crore have been completed. KVASU is establishing a translational research-cum-learning centre in the park. A central laboratory animal facility for KVASU will be built this year at a cost of ₹2.5 crore. The biotech incubation space will also be set up at a cost of ₹2.5 crore.
Construction of common facilities like common effluent treatment plant and sewage treatment plant, and installation of surveillance cameras will also be taken up as part of improving the basic infrastructure. The government has accorded sanction for a total amount of ₹10 crore for developmental activities at the park this year.
The Institute Of Advanced Virology and the medical devices park are also currently functioning in the park. The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and Amuseum ArtScience had last year organised Global Science Festival Kerala as part of efforts at popularising the park.
