Bharathiar University Alumni Association (BUAA) is exploring ways to fulfil its agenda of constructing a convention centre in the varsity campus.
Registered under the Association Act in 2019, the BUAA, which was formally inaugurated in 2001 by the then Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Ignachimuthu, currently has about 3,000 members in its fold.
The BUAA had, in 2022, proposed to construct a convention centre to accommodate at least three to four lecture halls, a gallery, a cafeteria and rooms.
At a meeting chaired then by BUAA president J. Angayarkanni, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Microbial Biotechnology, a resolution was adopted for naming it as Bharathiar University Alumni Convention Centre. A rough estimate of ₹4 crore was also arrived at, and the university had also, in principle, accepted to earmark five acres of land.
According to V.M. Subramanian, secretary, BUAA, and Associate Professor and Head In-Charge, Bharathiar University, funds have to be mobilised from members and philanthropists as well for construction of the convention centre since it was a massive project.
During the COVID pandemic lockdown, the association roped in experts from within to handle online classes for the students. And, in 2022, the BUAA contemplated making Alumni Lecture Series an annual feature. This will also have to be revived, he said.
The membership usually witnesses a quantum jump at the end of the academic year when the out-going PG students register their names in BUAA’s official website: https://b-u.ac.in/147/alumni-home, he said.
