President to inaugurate cancer hospital in Belagavi on December 30

President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the KLES Cancer Hospital in Belagavi on December 30.

The 300-bed hospital established by the KLE Society has been functioning for a few months now. Its formal inauguration is scheduled for December 30, society Chairman Prabhakar Kore told reporters on the hospital premises in Belagavi on Tuesday.

The hospital has been built on 1,75,000 sq ft area at a cost of ₹300 crore. It has all the latest technological tools and equipment. It has been named after the donor Dr. Sampatkumar S. Shivanagi.

Dr Shivanagi and his wife Dr. Udaya Shivanagi will be felicitated at the inaugural function.

“The hospital will offer subsidized treatment under various Central and State government schemes like the Vajpayee Arogya Scheme, Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka, Rajeev Arogya Bhagya, Jyoti Sanjeevini Scheme, DeenDayal Swasthya Seva Yojana (DDSSY),” Dr. Kore said.

According to him, the cancer hospital and research centre will be an integral part of the KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER).

It provides comprehensive cancer care services under one roof with a robust array of specialities, including Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Gynae-Oncology, Head and Neck Oncology, Haemato-Oncology, Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant, Paediatric Oncology, Intraoperative Radiotherapy, Lymphedemas Clinic, Onco-pathology, Onco-genetics, Onco-Neurology, Onco-Urology and Pain and Palliative Hospice Care.

The Radiation Therapy Department at the hospital is equipped with two top-of-the-line Varian Halcyon Elite and Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators, capable of providing Intensity-modulated Radiotherapy with image guidance, Rapid Arc, Hyper Arc, Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery.

The Saginova Brachytherapy Unit employs a High Dose Rate Cobalt-60 radioactive source, which allows for focused and comprehensive radiation delivery in proximity to any tumour.

These state-of-the-art technologies ensure swift and precise treatment delivery with minimal side effects for all types of cancer.

Radiation Oncology services began in April last year.

The hospital has a well-equipped daycare centre with trained staff for chemotherapy administration.

On an average, 200 patients are seen by medical oncologists every month and approximately, 400 patients receive different types of chemotherapy under the supervision of medical oncologists each month.

The Surgical Oncology section has two well-equipped operation theatres and a fully-functional ICU with ventilator support.

“The hospital and research centre will engage in creating awareness about cancer among the general public. We will focus on screening and early detection, not only among adults but also among children,” Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer Mallikarjun Jali said.

“The hospital provides nutritional counselling, physiotherapy and other rehabilitation services to support recovery. It also provides tailored plans for palliative care and pain management,” Dr. Jali said.

“In the early 2000s, the KLES Hospital identified a growing demand for cancer care in North Karnataka and took proactive measures. Staff members were sent for medical oncology training at prestigious institutions such as the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai and Chicago.

In 2005, the hospital introduced oncology services. However, with growing number of those afflicted, it became evident that the region needed a specialized, modern and comprehensive facility for cancer care and cancer cure, Dr. Kore said.

KLE Society’s network of hospitals have over 4,000 beds, including 1,700 charitable beds.

KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre is a multi-specialty hospital offering state-of-the-art multi-organ transplant services, he said.
