Higher education still remains a utopian dream for many rural and underdeveloped sections of society, according to Central University of Tamil Nadu Chancellor G. Padmanaban.

Professor Padmanabhan was delivering the ninth convocation of the university held at its Neelakudi campus on Saturday.

A total of 614 students received the degree, representing a diverse group of achievers across a range of disciplines at the convocation, according to a release.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that the convocation event would further the dream of “education for all”.

Pointing out that CUTN was relatively a young university and had rapidly grown, Professor Padmanaban said it had provided several opportunities to align with the sustainable development goals (SDGs), 17 of them, as identified by the United Nations.

Stating that everyone was duty bound to contribute to the spread of gains from SDGs to the future generations, he called upon the graduates to spread the knowledge they acquired to underprivileged students. The computers and internet could be utilised as vehicles to spread the knowledge. “Whatever be the path chosen by you in future, make sure that you are instrumental in enhancing opportunities for other individuals in your reach,” he said.

President’s message

President Draupadi Murmu, in her message to the university (which was read out at the event), commended the institution for its efforts to raise the awareness level of people in rural areas by its ‘extension of education’ activities.
