31,689 candidates to get degrees at University of Mysore’s 105th convocation on January 18

Female students continue to shine in the University of Mysore as 20,022 of them have become eligible to receive different degrees at the 105th annual convocation to be held at Crawford Hall here on January 18.

Women candidates have outshined men candidates, bagging overall recognition in PG and UG programmes besides bagging the highest number of gold medals and cash prizes.

In total, 31,689 candidates will be conferred with different degrees at the convocation. Among them, 20,022 (63.18%) are women and 11,667 are men. In all, 304 candidates will be receiving PhD degrees in various subjects. Among them 140 (46.05%) are women and 164 (53.94%) are men.

In a press conference here on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor N.K. Lokanath said, “As many as 6,300 candidates will be conferred Master’s degrees, and 4,074 candidates among them are women. As many as 25,085 candidates will be conferred bachelor’s degrees and 15,808 candidates (63.01%) are women candidates.”

Honorary Doctorate

Prof. Lokanath said the honorary doctorate will be conferred on three personalities in the 105th convocation. They include Dr. A.C. Shanmugham, former MP and Founder President, Rajarajeshwari Educational Institutions, Bengaluru; Dr. Babu K. Veeregowda, chief transport and traffic engineer, and Mr. Shaheed Majeed, Global CEO and Managing Director, Sami-Sabinsa Group, Bengaluru.

Infosys Foundation Founder and writer Sudha Murty, who was conferred the honorary doctorate in the 100th convocation of the university in 2020 and could not receive the honour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be receiving the doctorate in the 105th convocation on Saturday.

Governor participates

Prof. Lokanath said Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, who is the chancellor of the University, will preside over the convocation, while T.P. Singh, noted biotechnology research professor from the Department of Biophysics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, will deliver the convocation address. Minister for Higher Education M.C. Sudhakar will grace the occasion, he added.

Medallists

The medals in the Faculty of arts, commerce, science and technology, education, and law will be conferred on the occasion. Ms. Bhoomika M.R. of MSc Chemistry has bagged 18 gold medals and four cash prizes. Ms. Vivina Sweedal Thoras of MSc Botany has secured 10 gold medals and two cash prizes. Ms. Kavya C. of MA (Kannada) has bagged 11 gold medals and five cash prizes.

The total number of candidates getting the PhD degrees was highest in the faculty of arts with 111 candidates. This is followed by the faculty of Science and Technology where 110 students are eligible for the conferment of the PhD degrees.

Last year, a total of 32,240 students were conferred degrees at the 103rd convocation of the University of Mysore. Both in PG and UG, women had outshined men as 62.62% of them received degrees at the convocation. Among the gold medalists and winners of cash prizes, 180 candidates were women. Also, 539 candidates received PhD degrees in various subjects last year.
